F-4D Phantom II

Jack of all Trades (and services)

Few airframes are as prolific as the F-4 Phantom II. As one of the most produced American jet fighters, the F-4 was the first fighter to serve simultaneously with the US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. It was also the only aircraft to fly with the US Air Force Thunderbirds and the US Navy Blue Angels demonstration teams simultaneously. F-4s were not just for show, though. As an all-weather tactical fighter-bomber, F-4s served in Vietnam, engaging the North Vietnamese fighters as well as striking ground targets with ordinance.

Globetrotter Fighter

From Missouri to Thailand to Germany, the aircraft on display has had a well- traveled career. It served with six fighter wings across the globe. After retiring from active service, this F-4 transferred to Hill Air Force Base’s 649th Combat Logistics Support Squadron, where Airmen used it to train on aircraft field and battle damage repair. In December of 2004, it arrived at the Hill Aerospace Museum for display.

Phantoms at Hill

Hill Air Force Base has a storied history with the F-4 Phantom II. Hill personnel performed maintenance, repairs and modifications on multiple variants of F-4s for an astounding 29 years — beginning in 1966. This workforce also provided F-4 program management support, meaning they managed all aspects of the weapon system’s needs. Operationally, Hill’s 388th Fighter Wing flew F-4s during the Vietnam conflict out of Korat Air Base, Thailand.

This aircraft is on loan from the U.S. Air Force Heritage Program.
