Developed in 1963, the RF-4C differs from a typical Phantom thanks to its larger nose section with forward-facing windows, downward, and to both sides of the fuselage. These windows accommodated radar and aerial cameras for combat reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War. When production ended in 1973, RF-4Cs had been delivered all around the world for service.
The RF-4C on display rolled off the production line in 1967 and served on several bases within the United States, occasionally coming to Hill Air Force Base for maintenance and modification. In 1991, the US Air Force permanently assigned it to the 514th Test Squadron at the Ogden Air Logistics Center, and three years later, the Hill Aerospace Museum acquired the aircraft for display.
Hill Air Force base personnel painted this airframe in its current appearance to commemorate the installation’s 29-year F-4 Programmed Depot Maintenance mission that ended on 1 August 1994. If you look at the markings on each side, you will see decals that signify the allied countries and US Air Force organizations that either flew the F-4 and/or received F-4 weapon system support from Hill.
In 1962, Hill Air Force Base became System Support Manager for the US Air Force’s new F-4, which included assisting allied countries that flew this aircraft in the following decades. Hill personnel later began maintenance, repair and overhaul activities on the F-4, starting in 1966. For nearly 30 years, this mission remained on the base and included RF-C reconnaissance systems maintenance.
This aircraft is on loan from the U.S. Air Force Heritage Program.
