Fairchild Republic developed the A-10 around the GAU 8/A Gatling gun. The military needed a gun that could destroy light, medium and heavy tanks, armored personnel carriers, and fixed or mobile artillery, as well as hardened targets like bunkers and equipment within revetments.
This extraordinary gun fires 3,900 rounds per minute—approximately 61 rounds-per-second, making the recognized sound, “Brrrrrrrt.”

Known for its use in Desert Storm, the AGM-65 Maverick missile was designed for close air support. This missile can effectively strike a wide range of targets including air defenses, ships, transportation equipment, and fuel storage facilities. Over the years, the Raytheon Company constructed eight different models of the AGM-65 missile. The A-10 at the museum currently displays the AGM-65D, which is guided by infrared, weighs 485 pounds, has a diameter of 1 foot, and a wingspan of 2 feet, 4 inches. During Desert Storm, A-10 pilots used the displays from the infrared Maverick missiles to guide them because the A-10 was not equipped with avionics for night missions.

Many aircraft, like our A-10, play an important role in test and training for future system developments. From 1980 to 1985, tail #666 transferred to Edwards AFB as a YA-10A at the Air Force Flight Test Center. This test center ensures that aircrews go into combat with the most effective and reliable operational aircraft. After five years, the Air Force Armament Development Test Center (AFSC) took possession of the aircraft where it remained until September 1989. Tail #666 transferred to Sheppard Technical Training Center where it served as a GYA-10A for ground instructional airframe training. In April 1992, tail #666 retired from active service to join the USAF Museum system assigned to Hill Aerospace Museum as a static display.

Once the 309th completes needed repairs or maintenance, the 514th Flight Test Squadron (FLTS) conducts test flights to make sure the aircraft are airworthy. The 514th Flight Test Squadron at Hill AFB routinely performs functional check flights on the F-35 Lightning II, F-22 Raptor, F-16 Fighting Falcon, C-130 Hercules and A-10 Thunderbolt to certify the aircraft are fit to fight after undergoing maintenance, repair, or overhaul at Ogden Air Logistics Complex. If the aircraft passes its flight checks, it returns back to its home station.

Pilots use nose art for a variety of reasons, including to honor a loved one or intimidation. Many A-10s were painted with shark- and warthog-like features to intimidate the enemy. Today, the Air Force generally does not allow visible nose art, however, some pilots paint nose art on the underside of bomb bay doors or inside the ladder panel specifically on A-10s.

The nose landing gear is offset to the right of the aircraft to accommodate the GAU 8/A gun that resides on the centerline of the plane. Since the A-10 is built around the GAU-8/A, engineers adjusted the nose landing gear to allow the GAU to be positioned centerline on the aircraft.

Titanium armor surrounds the cockpit to protect the pilot from enemy attacks, specifically those of ground troops. Known as the “bathtub,” the cockpit is capable of withstanding 23mm armor-piercing rounds – protecting the pilot and increasing the aircraft’s overall survivability from small arms fire.

While developing and testing the A-10, the Air Force commissioned both General Electric and Philco Ford to design/develop guns that this airframe could use. General Electric’s GAU 8/A won in the shoot-off, where both companies showcased the abilities of their new gun systems.

Many aircraft start as a test model because of the substantial resources it takes to build full-sized, operational versions. Wind tunnel models, like this solid aluminum A-10 “Thunderbolt II,” allow testing of aircraft modifications and improvements before they are implemented in the field.
First built for testing in the 1970s, the A-10 SPO donated this A-10 wind tunnel model to the Hill Aerospace Museum in 2002. From 2013 to 2014, it left the museum for use in a joint project between NASA and the U.S. Air Force to evaluate changes in pitch, roll, and yaw stability of the aircraft.

The 309th Aircraft Maintenance Group (AMXG), assigned to the Ogden Air Logistics Complex (ALC) at Hill AFB, performs maintenance on several aircraft including the A-10. The 309th Aircraft Maintenance Group performs depot repair, modification and maintenance support on the F-35 Lightning II, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor, C-130 Hercules, and A-10 Thunderbolt. This support includes teams deployed worldwide to perform aircraft battle damage repair, crash damage repair and field-level depot maintenance.

The Air Force initiated the wind tunnel project with NASA to develop a replacement for the deployed leading-edge slats on A-10 aircraft without affecting other performance features. Researchers believed the current slat assembly on the A-10 was a contributor to twelve percent of mishap incidents between 2002 and 2012. Therefore, the Air Force designed and tested a new wing to reduce this risk. Researchers conducted tests at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex with this model to improve and sustain the A-10 design through 2028. After testing, NASA and the Air Force returned the model to the Hill Aerospace Museum.

The aircraft at the Hill Aerospace Museum is one of the first six A-10As manufactured. Although tail #666 never saw combat, the Air Force used it for Developmental Test and Evaluation (DT&E), which is a process that qualifies new military aircraft for service. The Air Force uses DT&E to test different aspects of aircraft before sending them into combat. These tests help the Air Force understand the aircraft’s limitations and capabilities as well as provide them with information to improve the aircraft’s capabilities if needed.
