C-124 in Active Duty Service

Military Air Transport Service (MATS) was the primary user of the C-124 during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1951, MATS had only 10 C-124s in its inventory; by 1963, it had 377. The U.S. Air Force used the C-124 Globemaster II for many different missions due to its ability to carry heavy cargo. These airframes could accommodate 200 troops or 127 patients on litters and their attendants, and carry up to 74,000 pounds of cargo. Its large 77-foot cargo bay permitted loading 95 percent of the Army’s field equipment without being disassembled. Airmen loaded cargo through either the “clamshell” loading doors and hydraulic ramps on the nose, two overhead hoists inside that could lift 8,000 pounds, or an elevator under the fuselage. The C-124 is famous for carrying large items such as tanks, bulldozers, trucks, missiles, and other aircraft when disassembled.

The C-124 at Hill Aerospace Museum was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Corporation in Long Beach, California. Below is the history of our C-124:
It was delivered to the USAF in May 1955 where it was assigned to the 15th Air Transport Squadron (Heavy) in Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.
In October 1955, it was moved to Goose Air Base in Labrador, Canada, to serve with the 6606th Air Base Wing, Northeast Air Command for a few days before being returned to Dover. While there, the C-124 was transferred to the 1607th Flight Line Maintenance Squadron (MATS) and then on to the 607th Air Transport Wing (Heavy) in February 1958.
Hill Air Force Base first received this Globemaster II when it was stationed here with the 1501st Air Transport Wing (Heavy) in June 1965.
Just two months later, August 1965, it was transferred to McChord Air Force Base in Washington where it remained until November 1969 with the 62nd Air Transport Wing (Heavy).

Finally, it was stationed with the 151st Military Airlift Group (Air National Guard) at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

In June 1972 the USAF dropped the aircraft from the inventory and transferred it to the United States Army. It stayed at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland where it was used as a storage facility.

It was scheduled to be used for ballistic research but Hill Aerospace Museum acquired it in 1992 for static display.

C-124's at Hill Air Force Base

Stationed at Hill Air Force Base, the 1501st Air Transport Wing (ATW) was one of the first units to operate the C-124. In December 1964, this unit had the mission of aircrew tactical training where it used the large airframe to train student flight engineers. Also stationed at Hill AFB during this period was the 733rd Military Airlift Squadron, a reserve airlift unit that flew the C-124. In May 1953, Hill Air Force Base performed maintenance, disassembly, and overhaul on 37 C-124’s from Larson Air Force Base in Washington. This photo shows the 28th ATS C-124C assigned to the 1501 ATW at Hill Air Force Base.

Celestial Navigation

Using a sextant, like this one, while looking out of these windows, the navigator could take celestial readings to pinpoint the location of the aircraft. The flight navigator would then give the current location and direction to the pilot who would then pilot the C-124 to its destination. By using a sextant, airmen calculated the altitude of different celestial bodies such as the sun, moon, or stars.

Humanitarian Efforts

During its service, C-124s supported humanitarian missions across the world providing food, medical supplies, and aid to countries affected by war or natural disasters. In 1962, the 945th Military Airlift Group, an Air Force Reserve unit at Hill AFB, launched Project Navajo to deliver hay and feed to Native American livestock following an especially harsh winter in this region. The unit continued this support and growing friendship with the Navajo Nation for years to come as they went on to donate and deliver clothes, school supplies, and other goods. For a time, one of the unit’s C-124 aircraft sported a stylized mural of the Advent of Christ painted by Navajo students from the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah. During the unit’s C-124 era, which ended in 1972, reservists here flew 5.5 million miles and carried roughly 6,000 passengers around the world.
