C-47's at Hill AFB and Operation Hayride

Hill Air Force Base repaired the engines used in the C-47 Skytrain beginning in the 1940s, but the airframe became important to the local community in 1948 and 1949. Eighteen snowstorms battered the Rocky Mountain and upper Great Plains regions in twenty-seven days during the winter of 1948-1949. Piles of snow trapped livestock and families, blocked rail lines, and temperatures dropped to 40 degrees below zero. Military bases across the nation rallied together to bring food, medical, and housing supplies to trapped families and animals. Using different types of aircraft, airmen delivered supplies to the isolated people. Airmen also airdropped bales of hay to trapped cattle and sheep. Twelve C-47’s, as well as thirty C-82’s, ran over 660 sorties in 30 days to deliver 2,500 tons of relief supplies to areas in eastern Nevada and western Utah. This massive relief effort became known as Operation Hayride. From January to March 1949, the Air Force used more than 200 planes, of which there were 85 C-47’s, to deliver over 4,700 tons of supplies to stranded people and livestock in eight states.

C. Kay Stowell

C. Kay Stowell was a 27-year Air Froce Veteran who served in the Army Air Corps and the Army National Guard as a C-47 Skytrain pilot. Stowell supported aerial drops of paratroopers and cargo, evacuated wounded service members, and flew VIP's throughout World War II. Of his experience Stowell said: "What touched me the most happened after Germany surrendered. We had the honor of flying our U.S. infantry troops in an aerial tour over the Italian battlefronts that they had courageously fought through."Stowell believed that the military provided him great values like discipline, obedience, and respect for country and flag.

Kay Stowell volunteered at the Hill Aerospace Museum for many years. He served as a military honor guard member and participated in more than 5,000 funeral/burial services in northern Utah throughout the years. The United States Air Force honored Stowell as a "Pioneer in Blue" and recognized with a portrait which hangs in the Pentagon in Washington D.C. He passed away in December 2020.

D-Day and World War II

On June 6, 1944, thousands of American and British soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. Military leaders named this mass effort Operation Overlord, later known as D-Day. Besides the men who landed on the beaches by boat, 18,000 paratroopers from the U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne Division and the British 6th Airborne Division landed behind German lines to cut off any reinforcements. By the end of the first day, over 23,000 paratroopers landed behind enemy lines. Their main form of transportation to the drop zones was the C-47 Skytrain. According to General Dwight Eisenhower, “Four things won the Second World War - the bazooka, the Jeep, the atom bomb, and the C-47 Gooney Bird.”

Parachuting

Airmen would parachute out the aircraft from this door. What makes this the ideal location for parachuting versus any other spot on the plane?

Smokejumpers

Smokejumpers might be the most interesting job title, however, what is a smokejumper and how is the C-47 connected? Smokejumpers are individuals who parachute out of aircraft to respond quickly to wildfires and other fire emergencies. The idea of using aircraft for wildfire response began as early as post-World War I but a smokejumper program didn't begin until 1940. The U.S. Forest Service created the first smokejumper programs for the Northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest regions. The first smokejumpers went into action on July 12, 1940 responding to a fire at the Nez Perce National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service officially began using C-47’s in 1946. The C-47 could land and take off from hastily constructed runways. The U.S. Forest Service used the Hill Aerospace Museum's C-47 for smoke jumping and combating wildfires in Utah. Once this airframe retired from service in 1987, it had logged more than 16,000 flight hours.

Why "Gooney Bird"?

Airmen nicknamed the C-47 Skytrain the “Gooney Bird” during its service because they felt it resembled the large and lumbering features of the albatross birds found throughout the Pacific Islands, also nicknamed gooney birds. Despite its goofy nickname, there is nothing goofy about this aircraft. The Skytrain operated with a crew of three airmen: a pilot, co-pilot, and radio operator. It could carry either 6,000 pounds of cargo, 28 airborne troops, or 14 patients on stretchers with three attendants. The U.S. military used the Skytrain for transport, gunship, evacuations, and reconnaissance roles during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Airmen later used this airframe for humanitarian aid and natural disaster relief. Its impressive resume of uses and missions prove its versatility and reliability to the U.S. Air Force despite how odd its nickname may be.
