Arrival at Hill
MH-53 tail #369 departed Hurlburt Field for the last time on 16 September, 2007. The aircraft arrived at Hill AFB two days later and then was placed on display in the Museum on 26 September.
The call sign of the #369 was Green Hornet 10.

Directed infrared countermeasures (DIRCM)
The AN/AAQ-24(V) Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) program was one of the U.S. Special Operations Command’s (USSOCOM’s) high priority acquisition programs. The MH-53 needed fast and accurate threat detection, processing, tracking, and countermeasures to defeat infrared missile threats.
The installation of the DIRCM system integrated a fully automatic mode to the chaff and flare dispenser system to counter radar-directed and infrared-based threats.

Hill AFB and the MH-53M
Hill AFB was assigned the 1550th Aircrew Training and Test Wing (ATTW) 1 April 1971. The 1550 ATTW trained all US Air Force combat helicopter crews and was the consolidation of all Air Force helicopter schools from around the country. The 1550 ATTW operated 68 helicopters, variants of the UH-1, CH-3, and H-53, and 6 fixed-wing HC-130s. Helicopter rescue squadrons also operated out of Hill AFB at this time.
Two helicopter simulators were used at Hill AFB to train over 2,000 United States and foreign students in flying proficiency for the Jolly Green Giant and Super Jolly helicopters.

History of the MH-53M 68-10369
The Sikorsky MH-53M was manufacture originally as an HH-53C “Super Jolly Green Giant”. Tail #369 entered service in March 1971 with the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Center at Eglin AFB, Florida. Two months later, the Air Force transferred #369 to the Aircrew Training and Testing Wing, Military Airlift Command, at Hill Air Force Base until June 1974 when then moved to the 6594th Test Group at Hickam AFB, HI.
In July 1986, the #369 transferred to the 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, FL, where the aircraft underwent modifications to convert to the MH-53J configuration. It was then assigned to the 16th Special Operations Wing, still out of Hurlburt Field, in 1994. During this service, the MH-53J updated to the MH-53M Pave Low IV.
While much of #369’s service life is unknown, however, we do know this aircraft participated in “Task Force Normandy” in January 1991. This mission consisted of three MH-53s leading a flight of AH-64 Apache helicopters against Iraqi radar sites prior to Operation Desert Storm.
Its last duty came before arriving at Hill AFB when it assisted in rescuing stranded passengers on the “Antalina,” a 584-foot-long petroleum freighter drifting without power in the path of Hurricane Ike. The rescue was later called off and #396 was placed on standby.

Night Vision
The IDAS/MATT allowed the MH-53M to use a color, multifunctional, night-vision compatible digital map screen. This screen, located on the helicopters instrument panel, gave the MH-53M crew a clearer picture of the battlefield. Integrating the digital map screen allowed access to real-time events, the flight route, man-made hazards such as powerlines, and enemy electronic threats. IDAS/MATT could sense enemy threat and offer the crew a solution instantaneously.

PAVE LOW IV program
Following its initiation in 1997, the PAVE LOW IV program aimed to provide the aircraft with enhanced threat detection and defense capabilities while also improving crewmember battlefield awareness.
The MH-53M integrated the Interactive Defensive Avionics System / Multi-mission Advanced Tactical Terminal (IDAS/MATT) to do just that. This advanced system provided crews with real-time intelligence and threat information, collected from various sensors on the aircraft, allowing them to update the flight profile in air to more effectively avoid known air defenses.
